What Are Pheromones? Can You Smell Pheromones?

What are Pheromones?

Pheromones are a secreted or excreted chemical component that triggers a social response in members of the same species. They are chemicals that are capable of acting like hormones, but outside of the body, rather than inside the body for hormones. They induce activity and impact behaviors in the receiving individuals, one being sexual arousal.

Mammals detect pheromones through an organ in the nose called the vomeronasal organ (VNO), or Jacobson’s organ. This organ connects to the hypothalamus in the brain.

Can You Smell Pheromones?

In short, pheromones are a nasal attraction. Men and women can smell others and are turned on by the aroma of others’ sweat. This is the olfactory system in humans, meaning all things related to smell. Men can smell when a woman is turned on because of the aroma of her sweat. They can usually distinguish between the scents of sexually aroused and non-aroused women. The detection of sexual arousel through smell can function as another channel of communication of sexual interest and may provide another factor of human sexual interest.
