How Do You Know if a Monomer Contains EMA and Not MMA? Warning Signs
If a salon has its bottles labeled, ask to see the ingredients list. Any salon using EMA will most likely be willing to show you their bulk product, and you should see the main ingredient “ethyl methacrylate” (EMA) on the list.
If you see “methyl methacrylate” (MMA) as the main ingredient, or if they refuse to show you their product, something may not be right, and it may contain the illegal MMA.
MMA warning signs:
- Manicurists will most likely be wearing a mask
- Use of a drill — even more so when the drill is damaging or painful
- Extremely low prices
- Strong, powerful odor, different from regular nail acrylic
- Unlabeled containers
- Nails are VERY hard to file and extremely hard to remove—if soaked in solvent, nails usually only take about 20 to 30 minutes to get off. Fake nails with MMA can take more than two hours
